Enterprise Data Model (Volkswagen)

An enterprise data model allows flexible modeling and development of modern applications on consistent data.

An enterprise data model allows flexible modeling and development of modern applications on consistent data. Another advantage is that the old applications can be used in parallel until they are no longer needed.

Complex, evolved system landscapes are a hallmark of the automotive industry. Complex processes and even more complex data landscapes are an inseparable part of this.

The usual realities of complex brownfields in the automotive industry are in direct conflict with the dynamic market requirements in an industry where everything is currently being turned upside down.

In the medium to long term, no company can avoid designing, implementing and introducing an enterprise data model. Companies that master the topic at an early stage have the potential to outperform the competition in almost all relevant dimensions.

Enterprise relevant digital consulting

We advise and develop concepts and solutions to transform the data silos trapped in applications into a neutral data layer with an associated information model. We develop solutions for critical topics such as data governance, compliance and AI-supported automation in order to be able to map these in a stable and sustainable manner.

The specific project involved the development of an enterprise data model platform for PDM data and the connection of relevant data sources. After developing the governance and development guidelines, all relevant source systems were gradually connected via so-called producers and transferred to the neutral data format.

In further steps, specific technical data views are generated from the neutral data via so-called consumers, which allow specialist applications and reporting platforms to easily use relevant data for specific technical purposes.

In perspective, this gives Volkswagen the freedom to react almost synchronously to market changes.

PDM data in the Enterprise Data Model

PDM (Product Data Management) data plays an important role in the automotive industry, as it forms the basis for the efficient planning, development, production and maintenance of vehicles.

In the automotive industry, PDM data includes all information about a product, including CAD drawings, 3D models, specifications, parts lists, test reports, prototypes, manufacturing information and maintenance schedules. PDM data helps engineers and designers to optimize production processes by ensuring that all information is available to manufacture products effectively.

PDM data is also used in the automotive industry to improve collaboration between teams and departments by ensuring that all employees have access to the same data. This can help to avoid errors that can arise from different versions of information.

Managing PDM data in the automotive industry requires close collaboration between different departments, including design, engineering, manufacturing and maintenance. To ensure that all teams work together effectively, specialized PDM software is often used to facilitate the management and sharing of data.
